Controlled Medication Prescribing

In May 2023, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) made an announcement regarding the status of Telehealth prescribing of controlled medications. According to this announcement, a temporary rule will take effect, which will allow online psychiatry offices, such as Unbound, to continue prescribing controlled medications to both new and existing clients without requiring an in-person exam. The DEA has also put a secondary rule in place that extends the telemedicine flexibility for the prescription of controlled medications until December 31, 2024. Unbound is committed to staying up-to-date with the latest updates and remaining in compliance with rules and regulations set forth by the DEA.

In 2024, Unbound's clients will not need to attend an in-person visit to receive a controlled medication prescription. However, if the DEA requires in-person exams for controlled medication treatment in the future, Unbound Health is fully prepared and able to see clients for in-person visits when needed.
All prescribing decisions made by Unbound's Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) are based on careful consideration of the client's clinical judgment and not on specific client requests. Unbound's approach to providing high-quality mental health care and responsible prescribing includes longer appointments that combine therapy with medication management to strengthen the therapeutic relationship and allow NPs to make the most informed prescribing decisions. Consistency is also maintained as Unbound has Board Certified Nurse Practitioners that provide care throughout the client's treatment journey. All visits occur via HIPAA-compliant and live face-to-face video, with no asynchronous care. Robust clinical policies are also in place to ensure that Unbound's NPs adhere to best practice standards.
